Midsummer Night Swing


July 7&14, 2008

The annual dancing under the stars at Lincoln Center starts this week. The action is taking place not on Fountain Plaza, the traditional location, which is a sea of construction owing to the center's ongoing renovations, but rather in nearby Damroch Park. There is still a dance floor though, and lessonpreceeding the shows....

A New Generation of Flappers and Sheiks

New York — some in flapper attire and some in jeans — came out to the Central Park Bandshell yesterday to dance to the Hot Jazz music of Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra.

Swing is a thriving subculture in New York and other cities around the country. Although the dilettantes pulled in by the "swing revival" of the late '90s have moved on, colleges, the Internet, and popular TV shows continue to attract 20-somethings to the scene. Read full article..

A Great Gatsby afternoon dance and picnic on June 9 opened the series of free summer weekends on the 150 acres of the historic section of Governors Island, a six-minute ferry ride from the southern tip of Manhattan. Two Thursdays ago, on a cold winter’s evening, the Young Friends of Save Venice gathered to celebrate their Red and White Masked Ball. The evening’s theme was first imagined in the 1920s when Cole and Linda Porter created the Red and White Ball in their Palazzo ca’Venice, later said to have been some of the most glamorous and legendary parties of the 20th century. TOMS RIVER – Bix Beiderbecke, the "young man with a horn" whose legend and music are the basis of jazz festivals and tributes nationwide, will be honored at the annual Big Bix Birthday Blast on Wednesday, March 21 at 8:00 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center at Ocean County College, College Drive, Toms River, NJ. To launch its new 100-proof vodka, Absolut partnered with UrbanDaddy for an event that masqueraded as a 1920s-style Halloween party.
For the American launch of Absolut 100, the brand's new 100-proof vodka, the Swedish distillery partnered with online magazine UrbanDaddy to throw parties in New York and Los Angeles. Originally intended to be a small speakeasy-themed event, Saturday's party drew such a large response that planners turned the New York launch into a massive 1920s-inspired costume party. Close to 800 flappers and bootleggers lined up to file into TriBeCa’s Bogardus Mansion over the course of the night. Target Embraces Old South for Collection Launch

Guests traveled to the island via New York Water Taxis, where they got a hint of the theme, sipping mint juleps from bars onboard. On the island, guests found the jazzy sounds of Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra and a path of paper bag lanterns leading to the event. The short walk ended at the Admiral's House, an imposing mansion with a long portico and tall white columns that served as a model house to show off how consumers can use the new products at home.
